I enrolled on the course because I have always really enjoyed English classes in school, I am a stickler for grammar, punctuation and spelling, and I have always had an eye for detail. I thought that I would be good at proofreading and editing and wanted to give it a try. I also thought that it would be a fun way to earn some extra money. I am a teacher, and so I was looking for something I could do on the side and during the summers when I am less busy.

The course went above and beyond my expectations. The quality of the tutorial support was excellent. My emails and queries were always responded to extremely quickly. My tutor, Jennie Harborth, also marked my assignments quickly yet thoroughly. She gave me praise when I had done something well and also explained in detail how to improve when something wasn’t quite
right.

All the lessons were very informative and interesting. Each lesson was laid out neatly and attractively. Everything was always clear and concise, but if there was something I was unsure of, I knew that my emails were welcomed. I learned exactly what the course description said I would learn! I learned the editorial skills needed to proofread and edit copy on paper, and on screen. Specific examples of what I learned include: key terminology, how to proofread according to the Guardian Style Guide, how to use symbols when proofreading on and off screen, how to use track changes, how to summarise effectively, the pitfalls to avoid, how to be clear and accurate when editing, the copyright laws to watch out for, how to check for webpage essentials and accessibility, and tips to help me start working within the field.

I thoroughly enjoyed the course! I have no complaints or areas where I am unsatisfied. If I have a friend who is interested in the proofreading and editing course, or any of the other courses offered by the College of Media and Publishing, I would definitely recommend that they try it out!
