I didn’t know what to expect, having never done any online courses before. But I have to say, I was really impressed.
I was surprised at how ‘human’ the tutors were. I expected my contact with them to be a little bit clinical and impersonal, but it absolutely wasn’t. On the occasions that I had questions, my tutor responded in a really personal way that made it clear they were actually focussing on my work and progress.
I loved the content. It covered some subjects that I’d come across in my day-to-day work as a copywriter, and then layered it with lots of modules that I would never have considered to be part of the proofreading/editing role. Despite being a copywriter for more than 20 years, I really learned a lot and now feel that I have a fully rounded skill set.
The course forced me to revisit a lot of the language and grammar rules that I hadn’t looked at in years, so it really helped me to refresh and strengthen my knowledge of punctuation, grammar, sentence structure etc. New skills I learned included the use of British proofreading marks, the ‘official’ publishing industry approach to proofreading and copy-editing projects, and the use of queries and style guides. The final modules on law and copyright were highly informative too.
