A distance learning course studentI have just left teaching after 22 years and I want to try and utilise my skills in a different career.

The course certainly met my expectations. The lessons were detailed and I really liked the links to other websites and quizzes to complete. I spent a long time making detailed notes on each of the lessons and I really enjoyed completing the practical assignments.

The tutorial support was excellent. I received detailed comments for each of the assignments I submitted, which was both encouraging and informative.

The course content was varied and interesting. I liked the amount of variety from lesson to lesson and I learned a great deal. Actually, I was surprised at how much I did learn and although I wanted to complete the course and ‘graduate’, I would happily have completed further practical activities.

I learned absolutely loads! Too much to comment on here, but the things which stand out are the following: the GSG and BBG (even after so many years of teaching English, I didn’t know this grammar and punctuation guide existed); how to mark up changes and corrections using Adobe and Word; revisiting the symbols for proofreading on paper; different levels of proofreading; considering a multicultural audience; different types of law relevant to publishing and the frequently misused words in the last lesson.

The course was great. It could be improved by further practical written activities in addition to the quizzes at the end of some of the modules. Also, having links with companies to gain some practical experience at the end of the course.

Overall, the course was excellent. I would highly recommend it to anyone looking to improve their skills in proofreading and editing or even their general knowledge of the English language
