A distance learning course studentMy former research group was relocating to Exeter and I decided not to go. The group leader asked if there was any course or training they could pay for, to allow me to take a new direction. I had already decided to explore freelance science editing as a new career and then searched for courses that would be a good fit. Therefore, although the University of Aberdeen paid for the course, it was to support my career outside of the university.

The course was very useful and informative and I feel that in addition to my work experience of science editing within academia, I now have an official grounding in proofreading and editing. The course has met my expectations in providing a thorough basis in editing. Perhaps this course went beyond my expectations.

I found the tutorial support from Shuna Meade very helpful. Her notes were well explained and her tone was warm and friendly.

The learning material was very clear and engaging. The earlier assignments and the latter assignments were quite easy and quick to do. Some of the assignments were very long and much more challenging. Examples of the long and challenging assignments are proofreading on paper, proofreading on screen, copy editing basics, and use of language. This was a positive way to learn because the training for these modules was very much in the work done during the assignment. The module on legal considerations is a helpful resource.

I have learned a lot about so many things, even though I felt fairly competent from my work experience editing academic content. The resources referred to, including the Blue Book of Grammar and the Guardian Style Guide were resources that I did not know about until taking this course.

This course was enjoyable to do, and expanded my knowledge. I now feel confident that I have the knowledge to go out there and offer professional freelance editing services.
