I enrolled on this course in the hope of working from home and, maybe, starting up my own business. I had to give up work 15 years ago as a team leader in International Banking after I was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis and had two children under the age of four to look after.

I’ve recently turned 40, and even though I have found a few hobbies to occupy my time, I knew, I needed to do something with the rest of my life to make some money. With my eldest child now studying at university, and my other child, who I home educate, close to taking GCSE exams, I have had a lot more time on my hands.Jo Alexander: CMP proofreading course graduate

I’m still unable to walk very well, so I read a lot these days and I am always picking up on errors, which I find quite annoying – especially when you’re not getting paid for it! That’s when I had the eureka moment and realised that I could do proofreading work from home, and I could be paid for it!

I found your college on the internet and noticed that you offered a proofreading and copy-editing course, something the other colleges didn’t. I was interested in finding out more about copy-editing and decided to enrol. It is great that I could learn both subjects together in one course.

This course surpassed my expectations: I was taught more than I expected, I educated myself more than I expected, I enjoyed it more than I expected, and I really was, more interested than I expected to be. There were times when I found it challenging, but it didn’t make me feel overwhelmed, or as if I couldn’t cope, I just knew it meant that I was learning something new!

Unfortunately, I had three different tutors for my first four assessments because my first tutor moved on to teach something else within CMP. Nevertheless, the transition was very smooth; all the tutors are very competent and approachable, so it didn’t impact on my studies at all. The new tutor, Rachel, is very knowledgeable, friendly and helpful, replying to my queries within 24 hours. It’s just a shame I didn’t have her as a tutor from the start.

The course content was very educational. The lesson booklets were interesting and well-written, with a touch of humour thrown in. I was quite content reading a booklet from start to finish, in one sitting, without feeling bored and switching off.

I was only expecting to learn how to do proofreading (level 1, light editing), and copy-editing (level 2, medium editing), but it was a bonus that I also learned how to do content editing (level 3, substantive editing), and globalisation copy-editing. I also learned how to use punctuation more confidently, and use grammar and vocabulary more effectively than I could before the course; which in turn has helped me to become a better writer.

I received my certificate through the post this morning. I’m so happy, I achieved a distinction – that was what I set out to achieve. Therefore, I don’t see there is anything else needed to improve the course. It has been a pleasure to study at CMP.
