This course exceeded my expectations! Having never taken an online course before, I was apprehensive as to the content and the depth to which each topic would be studied. As soon as I read through the first piece of learning material and saw how well the topics were laid out and covered, I knew I had made the right choice.
The tutorial support was excellent throughout my course. My assignments were returned within the specified time limits and all came with a wealth of feedback of what I had done well and what I could do to improve next time.
The content of the course covered everything from the basics of proofreading and editing, both online and on paper, to legal issues that proofreaders and editors may face within the copy they are working on. The breadth of topics ensured that I now have a good understanding of many aspects of proofreading and editing and also know where to go if I have any queries pertaining to style and content within copy.
The main lesson I learnt from this course is that professional proofreading and editing is so much more than checking for spelling errors! I now know the importance of a style guide, and what to use if one is not provided, as well as how to proofread and edit using a variety of online and paper tools. I also learnt how to edit for different audiences, the different levels of editing and, crucially, the difference between proofreading and editing.
I truly do not think that the course could be improved.
Overall the course was exactly what I wanted it to be. It provided me with the opportunity to both prove and test my skills and I gained invaluable knowledge which I hope will stand me in good stead for a future freelance careers.
