Once you have finished a proofreading course, it is important to put your skills into practice as soon as you can.

The best way to start is by telling all your friends, family members and work colleagues that you have just completed a proofreading course. Most people you tell will be delighted.

Soon you will be flooded with demands to review CVs, Facebook and LinkedIn profiles. There aren’t many things more important to people’s careers than their CV, yet they are often full of the most glaring errors.

This is where you can give your friends a real competitive advantage in the jobs market. Once you start looking at them, you’ll find plenty that you can help with.

In fact, you may be quite shocked at the poor standard of writing.

Two CVs I read recently included such gems as: “I want to work in sales because I get a real frill out of it.” Another candidate wrote that she took a year out after university and “immigrated to Australia.”

Needless to say, they didn’t get to the interview stage.

Once you’ve helped one friend, they will be so delighted, that word will soon spread. Particularly, if your advice helps them to get the job.

That is what’s so important in helping you get your proofreading career going: a great reference from a happy customer, who tells all their friends about your services. You are vital to their careers!
