One of our proofreading course graduates was recently offered £6 per thousand words to read a website.

She said her lowest price was £8 per thousand – and didn’t get the job.

She asked us later: ‘How do you get round this and make a living?’

It’s a difficult problem, and comes down to ‘market forces’. There are plenty people on the internet who are happy to work for £6 per thousand words, and they drive the price right down. But their standards aren’t always high.

They aren’t qualified, and aren’t always reliable. But clients don’t know that – and learn the hard way.

The only way to make a living is to find clients who are prepared to pay more in order to guarantee quality and service.

That’s where the CMP diploma comes in. It demonstrates to clients that you can work to a certain standard.
