All copywriters have been there. Even after they have completed their copywriting course, they have an imminent deadline looming, but are still staring at a blank screen at 1am wondering: Why can’t I come up with an opening sentence?

Writer’s block affects us all.

It doesn’t diminish as you become more accomplished after completing your online copywriting course. Even some of the world’s greatest writers suffer from this affliction.

There are a number of reasons for this block. With writing, you are putting your thoughts and ideas out there for the world to critique. This triggers a fear of rejection that often stops us from thinking clearly.

Another reason is perfectionism. Whatever we write is never good enough and needs constant revisions and edits. This slows the writer down and often causes further anxiety as the deadline approaches.

Sometimes, it comes down to the fact that the time isn’t right. You might be going through a stressful period, or you could simply just be too tired to think properly.

The good news is that there are many techniques that writers employ to overcome this problem. Many copywriting courses offer different suggestions but there is no magic cure. However, it’s important to remember that writing is an art not a science so it’s best to approach it that way.

Going for a walk is always a good way to get the creative juices flowing. It allows your mind to rest and think of other things resulting in an idea for your article.

Plan your writing. This can be in the form of a spider diagram allowing you to brainstorm ideas or list bullet points.

It also helps to keep a swipe file of well-written copy to turn to whenever you’re stuck for ideas. Read it to remember how a well-written piece of copy should be structured.

One of my favourite ways to beat the block is to just write. This sounds obvious but if you start writing anything that comes to mind, without stopping for edits, you soon start to feel inspired and ideas will start flowing.

The real work will come later in the editing process, but for now you are getting whatever is in your head on screen.

The more experience you get as a copywriter, the more you will discover your own techniques and develop the confidence that will allow you to push through that barrier.
