What proofreading course students do with closed-up characters

Pen and paper with red correctionsSome proofreading symbols often mystify our proofreading course students.

One pair – of symbols, not online proofreading course students! – that often bewilder people are D5 and D6.

D5 is when two or more characters are too close together, probably because of a tracking or kerning error.

You put the symbol between each character affected, to indicate they should be separated.

‘Thin’ space means the minimum amount of space needed to make the spacing the same as the rest of the document.

D6 is similar. But here, the space inserted is a specific measure, eg, 2pt, or 2mm, or in Word, 2%.

The width will be determined by the text in the rest of the document.
