Advice for home study course students on getting articles published

Finding publishers for your written articles can be tricky at times, especially when you are first starting out.

A lot of would-be writers start by checking the internet and the newsagents’ shelves. But, our home study courses suggest they’re going about things the wrong way round.

It’s best to come up with an article idea first. This will probably be something from your own experiences, interests, background, or work.

Then, you find a market for it afterwards.

So, you start looking on the newsagents’ shelves and in internet directories to find a publication that uses articles related to your idea.

Once you have selected your market, you need to analyse its content and writing style, and make sure your articles matches their requirements.

And of course, make sure you find out if they accept freelance submissions.

I always find this approach works better than picking a magazine, and then trying to work out what to write.
