Many businesses and organisations use newsletters, as they are an effective way of staying connected with current clients and new ones, too. But the potential benefits can be lost if the copy isn’t written by a qualified copywriter – someone who has done a copywriting course.

A newsletter is a shop window, and can either create a good impression, or a bad one.

And we tell learners on our copywriting course to follow the following tips, to ensure that the copy and the appearance of newsletters harmonise.

1. Make sure any imagery does not overshadow the content of the newsletter.

2. Keep everything simple – do not overdo colours, images, page furniture.

3. Make sure the colour scheme, style etc used matches the one used in the business’ other advertisements and branding.

4. Use clean, black font throughout the newsletter for continuity and to make it easier to read.

5. Rarely if ever, use a coloured font for body type, unless in hyperlinks. Avoid putting occasional words in bold, as these can be mistaken for links.

6. Do not over-use the logo. It should only be displayed at the top of the newsletter; no more than once per page.

7. Make sure the copy and the images relate to one another.
