Andy Carter: Course tutor
Group head of news | Comms consultant
BBC | Sky News | Virgin Radio | Leeds Council
I am CMP’s external affairs specialist and tutor in PR and social media marketing.
I started my journalism career in the early 1990s with a local radio station on the south coast of England. My first live outside broadcast was from Stonehenge for the Summer Solstice.
I went on to work for the BBC, Sky News and Virgin Radio.
I spent three years as the group head of news for a large commercial broadcaster with responsibility for compliance, legal and training across 27 newsrooms and 60+ journalists.
I switched to PR and communications in 2008 and have been in charge of communications at three local authorities and a university.
I am also a director of my own PR, communications and broadcasting consultancy.
In the past, I used my extensive digital, social media and video skills to help a major UK utility company improve its customer communications.
I spent 2017 at City of York Council as head of communications. I am currently working in communications roles in local government and a FTSE-100 company.
I am a member of the Chartered Institute of Public Relations and the Public Relations and Communications Association. I am also the chair of trustees for a charity based in Leeds.
