There are plenty of opportunities for proofreaders to start their own businesses these days. But we tell our proofreading course students that it’s essential to have a well-optimised website.

That means identifying relevant key search words and phrases. This is something that our online proofreading course students often ask us about. What are keywords? How do they work?

In fact it’s very simple.

Keywords are the various phrases that people type into search engines when they’re trying to find a product or a service. They range from “local election results” to “Simon Cowell wedding” and “Chichester proofreaders” to “I need a proofreader”, depending on what the person is trying to find.

So when you choose your keywords, try to cover the various terms and expressions that people may use when searching for proofreaders.

Some proofreading course students understand it better when we use a news article as an illustration.

So for this new article the search words could be:

  1. Chichester College news
  2. Luke Jeffrey
  3. Luke Jeffrey stabbing
  4. Chichester murder
  5. Chichester murder victim

If you’re looking for freelance work after your proofreading course, then the same principles apply.

Our partner organisation, Digital Creative Hub, can help you design and optimise a website for your proofreading business. They offer an exclusive 20% discount for all of their services, too.
