A proofreading course student was checking a document for copyright, and asked us about the situation with a photo.

It had been provided by a PR agency. So did this make it safe to use?

We told her that PR photos are usually safe, though it was worth confirming if the copyright was theirs to pass on.

It’s easy to assume that suppliers of photos have made the necessary copyright arrangements.

It’s the publisher who’s liable if they haven’t. It’s always best to doublecheck with every image that you use online. It can be expensive if you get it wrong.
