Many people are put off writing a letter of complaint because they don’t think their standard of English is good enough. A proofreading course is the answer.

Either they are poor spellers, bad punctuators or their grammar is not so good.

This may be the case but it should not put someone off accepting a complaint and acting on it. Unfortunately though, it does.

Imagine how you would feel if you received a badly written letter complaining either about you or your company.  You would think the sender simply could not be bothered. More to the point, you might not be bothered to answer it thinking the person could not possibly be serious.

So if you want to get writing and know you need to improve your presentation, why not enrol on an online proofreading course?

These teach you to carefully read a document or any type of text to detect any spelling, punctuation or grammatical errors, and other editorial skills, too.

There are many proofreading courses at different adult colleges that abound. You could go online to find one in your area, or do it the old fashioned way and look in the Yellow Pages or your local telephone directory.

Such courses are likely to be part time, once or twice a week, usually in the evenings. You might be able to find a one day course, maybe on a Saturday.

If you cannot find one at a time convenient to you, then consider doing a distance learning proofreading course
These are more flexible and usually there is no time limit as you work at your own pace and round any responsibilities you might have.

They vary in price and you would need to work out your budget and value for money as it relates to each course.

Don’t be worried about asking questions before parting with your money. Most organisations would prefer this to your joining them only to find it is not what you expected or is poor value for money. More to the point, they don’t want to end up having to answer a letter of complaint.

You may find that by doing such a course your standard of English improves dramatically. If so, why not consider becoming a professional proofreader.

You can become freelance, get up a blog and advertise yourself on the internet.

There are also agencies dealing with freelance work though you would of course have to pay them a commission.
